Rhee TaeKwon-Do was created in 1965 by the 'Father of Australian TaeKwon-Do', 8th Dan Black Belt, World Master Chong Chul Rhee, one of the twelve original masters of TaeKwon-Do.
Master Rhee, a former unarmed combat instructor of the Korean Marines was selected to develop TaeKwon-Do under General Choi Hong Hi (creator of TaeKwon-Do), to Australia and New Zealand. Hence Master Rhee created the first and largest TaeKwon-Do school in Australia.
Essentially, Rhee TaeKwon-Do is the military style, closer to the traditional martial art and is an independent organisation. It is similar to the ITF style rather than WTF (World TKD Federation), the sporting type. Rhee TaeKwon-Do focuses more on perfecting technique and is non-contact, to teach students control when attacking.
The training itself involves using a combination of strong techniques such as punches, flying kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions. Students also learn sparring, board breaking and patterns, similar to kata in Karate,a series of movements relative to the name of the pattern used to develop skills and practiced to move forward in the belt grades.
As well as this, Rhee TaeKwon-Do teaches students respect, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and develops an indomitable spirit. These are some of the tenants of Rhee TaeKwon-Do and are essential in developing a Rhee TaeKwon-Do way of life.
Led by Master Rhee, and his instructors, Rhee TaeKwon-Do continues to develop largely in Australia and New Zealand, it is available for anyone of any age to train, enforces self discipline, respect and develops a strong body and mind.
Although I have just started my training, I would encourage anyone to give Rhee TaeKwon-Do a try. Not only is it beneficial for your health but it is also a great way to meet friends, to have fun learning something useful and to have pride in yourself.
Thank you for reading.
